No-Code Edge AI with COLIGO, NXP and Torizon

BE.services, a company specialized in embedded software and data connectivity, based in Kempten, Germany, built COLIGO, a no-code Edge AI software-and-hardware solution that lets industrial and building automation engineers collect, monitor, and learn from their data at the edge, running anomaly detection, predictive analytics, and machine vision on brownfield equipment without cloud dependency or in-house AI expertise. Torizon and Toradex provided the secure, scalable foundation that made this possible, allowing BE. to focus entirely on what they do best.

BE.services spent a decade helping other companies build embedded firmware before, drawing on this rich practical foundation to begin developing its own product, COLIGO, three years ago as a self-financed initiative.

COLIGO was not created simply as another technology platform. It was shaped by recurring challenges BE. had seen across real-world customer projects and industrial applications. The goal was to combine the lessons learned from developing customized solutions into a product that makes industrial data and Edge AI easier to use for the people who know the machines and processes best.

That experience showed the team how much the landscape had shifted: embedded products used to be defined by hardware, but today success means software that has to be operated, maintained, and secured against growing cyber threats while still delivering faster time-to-market, predictable lifecycle costs, and readiness for regulation like the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Building that technical foundation alone wasn't realistic for a small, self-financed team, so COLIGO was built on Toradex hardware and Torizon OS instead.

Overcoming Hardware Challenges with the Toradex Verdin iMX8M Plus

COLIGO's Edge AI needed real machine-learning and vision performance on the factory floor, but BE. wanted to avoid investing its resources in developing and maintaining its own hardware platform. The Toradex Verdin iMX8M Plus System on Module with its multi-core Arm processor, integrated NPU, and image signal processor was already available on ready-to-use development boards, letting BE.services get a working proof of concept in place quickly, without needing to become a hardware company itself. This allowed the team to focus on what differentiates COLIGO: making industrial data accessible and enabling automation engineers to use Edge AI without having to become hardware, Linux, or AI specialists.

Focusing on Application Value with Torizon

With the module selected, BE.services weighed building its own Yocto-based Linux distribution against building on Torizon OS. Assembling secure OTA updates, containerized applications, fleet monitoring, and vulnerability management themselves would have cost significant time and money, and been hard to maintain long-term. So, the team built on Torizon instead, concentrating on the Edge AI application while Torizon OS and Torizon Cloud handled the platform underneath it, OTA updates, containerization, vulnerability management and more included.

BE.services and Toradex have worked together for seven-plus years, and COLIGO itself is self-financed with a small team, so having OTA updates, fleet monitoring, and security already built into Torizon, rather than needing to be built and maintained in-house, was decisive. Toradex's continuous investment in next-generation hardware also means COLIGO can keep adding performance and features as new modules become available.

We just concentrated on our value, which is our Edge AI solution, but we did not take care of the middleware, over-the-air updates or most of the CRA requirements. Everything was taken care of by the Toradex and Torizon combination.

COLIGO EdgeStack, running on the SYNA EdgeBox, went from idea to a first version on the market in about a year, firmware development and validation included, because BE.services didn't have to build the hardware, build its own Linux distribution, or take care of the middleware, OTA updates, and CRA-related tooling from scratch.

I'm not saying go for Torizon and then everything is done. Being compliant is a manufacturer responsibility, it's about processes and using the right tools. But on top of all the functionality Torizon already provides, it helps you enormously with CRA compliance.

Toradex and Torizon handled that foundation end to end, letting BE.services focus on the application instead of worrying about the base underneath it. Reducing engineering effort and making product costs predictable across the product's lifecycle rather than a source of surprises later.

That foundation also shows up in what COLIGO can offer its own customers: a no-code interface where automation engineers with no AI background can collect data, monitor it, and deploy anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and machine vision use cases in a single app, on top of a base platform maintained for the long term, rather than one the customer has to keep patching themselves.

It also puts COLIGO ahead of the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which started requiring vulnerability reporting on September 11, 2026. SBOMs, secure boot, vulnerability monitoring, and secure OTA updates are already built into Torizon OS and Torizon Cloud, mapping directly onto core CRA obligations, without BE.services having to build that compliance tooling itself.

Support is what BE.services keeps coming back to, both the seven-plus-year relationship with Toradex and the confidence that new hardware and software capabilities keep arriving, which is why the team doesn't feel tied to any single hardware generation and keeps recommending Torizon and Toradex to its own customers to make their products.

Security is part of that same confidence: since BE.services isn't a security specialist itself, it relies on Torizon's built-in security features to meet what the market now demands from a long-term embedded product.

Together, Toradex and Torizon give COLIGO a hardware and software foundation it doesn't have to build or maintain itself, so the team can stay focused on turning industrial data into AI-driven outcomes.
